another name

Thank you for the puppy name suggestions!

Here are the suggestions: Rocky, Woof, Danny Boy, Chloe, George, Bruce, Bishop, Hickory, James, Harvey, Louis. Bond… James Bond. Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, John Wayne, Mr. Fluffykins, O’Neil, Shaemus (Shae for short), Hasselhoff (just no), Lord Voldemort, Bilbo Baggins, McTavish, Fluffy McFuzzleface, more votes for Bond, Shae, Donut, Bingo, Prince, Trig, Dan, Jimmie.

Finally, after three days and trying out three names, (Shae, Bo, and Bond), we gave up and my son named our puppy Luke. It fits. My son discovered the name after searching his feelings.

He had a stuffed puppy named Luke when he was little. Now, in his very own Velveteen Rabbit tale, his puppy has come to life!

Luke the Sheltie

The two Shelties are getting along fantastic.

What do you call those amazing lights in the photo below? Officially, they are called Northern Lights and Aurora Borealis. Can you come up with a unique name? If you can guess what I call them in my new picture book, Winter North Coming, I’ll post it online.

read.                dream.               write.               share.

This cute little guy is a Shetland Sheepdog (also called a Sheltie), just 11 weeks old. He is a discount puppy, as he was the last of a litter.

He had two strikes against him. He was the runt of the litter, and he is a boy. Most puppy buyers ask for female pups, thinking they are calmer. That may be true, but we were looking for a little spitfire to be friends with our 1 1/2-year-old Sheltie, O’Malley, who is a busy, playful furball.

The dog breeder had to bring this pup into her kitchen and hand-feed him so he would get his share. His big brothers and sisters weren’t giving him a spot at the milk-bar, or the food bowl. Since then, he has caught up to his siblings in size. We are so happy he had a great friend to help him survive!

As we were driving home, I posted on Facebook, asking friends and family to help us name him.

Do you have any suggestions?

After you think of a name, write a short story about what it must have been like for him as a little puppy pushed aside by his big brothers and sisters. If you send it to me, I’ll post it on this site. 🙂

Stubbs the Lizard

This is a picture of Stubbs, my younger son’s bearded dragon lizard when she was younger and smaller. (Please excuse the slightly messy countertop, as I think she enjoyed a bath just before this scene.) Here, she has just received a wonderful new gift… a (fake) ant hill. My son loaded it with crickets from the pet store, and Stubbs is munching them down when they crawl out. There is a stopper in the foreground, which plugs the hole, to save some snacks for later.

If you could have any pet in the world, what would it be? (Please don’t say crickets, as then I would have to feel really sorry about feeding them to Stubbs.) What would you like to give your pet, so he or she enjoys living in your habitat? Write out your story and send it to me. 🙂

P.S. (Post Script) – In case you are wondering, Stubbs is not slimy in the least. Her skin is quite dry, much like leather. Every now and again, when she is growing, she will molt. Her skin will peel off, as she grows another larger skin layer.

Do you ever feel as though you are falling through no fault of your own, and there is nothing you can do to stop it?

You do all of your tricks to grab onto the sides, to get a handle-hold onto something, anything, but you keep falling anyway!

Use this as a jumping off point to write your story.

Who is the child falling? Who caused her to fall? Where will she land?

Happy Writing!

woodland fairy

This young lady is a woodland fairy. She has startled you as you were walking home from school. She has special powers and isn’t afraid of anything or anyone.

She has a special mission for you.

What is it?

Write it down!

same but different

lie down on the floor and close your eyes

imagine you have something growing around you

what is it?

flowers (as the girl in the photo)

you are the same person inside, but everything is different on the outside

which did you choose from the list above?

now construct a world around yourself

what is your world like?

in your imagined world, you have a family

they are completely different than your real family

what are they like?

there isn’t school or work in your pretend world

what does everyone do?

it may be winter in some parts of the world, but in others it is summer

still in others, there is something which is completely different than seasons

what could it be like?

Art · Creativity

These children have just received a gift of sidewalk chalk.

Where do they live?

What are their names? Invent names… don’t use common ones.

Are they in school or not?

What will they create?

How will their art change something about their world?

After you are finished, send your story to me and see it published on this site!

After reading a book you really like, jump to a blank page and continue writing your own story.

Use a plot twist and see what happens!

There are sites where you may post fanfiction, such as fanfiction dot net, wattpad, and letterpile to name a few. I’ve never used them, so can’t vouch for them, but others have and enjoy the experience.

Happy writing!

You received a telegram a few days ago. The envelop contained plane tickets and a hotel reservation for you and as many family members as you’d like to take along. A distant relative has left you something valuable.

This is your first morning in the strange city. A message is on the phone: you’ve been summoned to meet your anonymous benefactor at the infamous landmark: the Eiffel Tower.

But first you have a scrumptious Parisian breakfast at a cafe near your hotel.

The air feels strange in this place. How does it feel? What are the morning sounds in the city?

Now you are seated at a cafe. What will you have? the waiter asks.

After, how did it taste? What were the textures?

Here you are… waiting now at the tower. Who will turn up? Why have they summoned you? What will your inheritance be? Your family members add their opinions. How did the conversation go?

What are you reaching for?

Close your eyes.

Imagine it is {a different season}. How does it smell? How does the air feel? What do you hear?

Now, without opening your eyes, reach out and grab ahold of…

What was it?  [make something up]

Write a descriptive paragraph about this experience. Send it to me and see it in print.
